BREED STANDARD

The Belgian Blue White is a large breed, precocious, robust and massive, relatively calm, with particular development in terms of musculature and harmonious lines.

DRESS

Apart from the piebald character (recessive with respect to the “all colored”) present in most colored subjects, there are three types of coloring in the breed: all white, blue (pie-bleu), black (black magpie). These 3 coat phenotypes correspond to the segregation of a pair of genes inherited from the Shortorn. Blue (equivalent to roan in the Shortorn) is the intermediate phenotype (heterozygous).

CALVING

In pure breeds, the conformation of calves, whose beef value is incommensurably higher than that of calves of other breeds, leads to more difficult calving. This is why in Belgium, support for the birth of the Belgian White-Blue calf by the farm veterinarian is a widespread practice. Based on his expertise, and out of concern for the well-being of the mother and the calf, the veterinarian can decide to perform a cesarean section. This practice is not currently called into question within our selection program. However, we practice very careful monitoring of the breed. For example, the conformation and weight of calves at birth are monitored quite closely in the selection program, which is demonstrated by the exceptional characteristics of the terminal cross breed, particularly with regard to calving ease. .
